My experience studying Media, Culture and Communication

I came to the University of Sunderland after a few years out working in tourism and customer service.

I decided it was time for the next step, and began researching courses when I came across the Media, Culture and Communication course at the University of Sunderland. After reading through the course page on the website, and going through each module, I knew instantly that it was the course was for me!

I chose to study MCC as it was so flexible, you can really tailor the course to fit your interests and potential career. Being able to choose between more practical modules or theoretical ones meant that it was a broad course with a lot of options. This also meant it was extremely interesting as it included many different disciplines. After researching online, I then went on a tour of the Sir Tom Cowie campus which further solidified my decision. The facilities are industry standard, the lecturers are friendly and approachable, and the campus has such a lovely community vibe.

My experience studying has been better than I could ever have imagined. There has been so much support from staff, and so much scope to grow and develop my skills as well as lots of opportunities to try new things. I’ve made some wonderful friends who share common interests and I really feel part of the wider university community. In a typical week I attend a mixture of lectures, seminars and screenings, as well as tutorials and work shops where I get the chance to discuss my work and receive support from staff and course mates.

We also have Friday evening reading groups, Cineclub and a Common Room outside of lecture time which allows for social interaction and essay support/fun discussions, especially while we’re learning online! I spend time each day working on assignments, and have recently finished a presentation on the horror film Orphan, which I really enjoyed working on in a group! My favourite modules have included TV Cultures, Sexual Cultures, Media Studies 1 and 2, Researching Media in Everyday Lives, Film, Horror and the Body, Sci-Fi and more! There really is so much to choose from, and something for everyone!

My top three reasons to study Media, Culture and Communication are: 

• The course is broad and draws on a number of disciplines from media, allowing you to do a practical or theoretical course, or a mixture of both!
• The staff are all lovely and approachable, and more than happy to help.
• The media facilities are industry standard, with editing suits, studios and even a cinema!
