Hiya, my name is Afsina and I am a third year Graphic Design student.
Here are three reasons why Graphic Design should be a course you study.
Number one: You explore all areas of design! There's never a dull moment as Graphic Design is a broad industry.
Number 2: It pushes you out of your comfort zone and allows you to increase your skills and knowledge of software and design skills.
Last but not least: Graphic Design is all around us and as a designer YOU get to communicate to the audience in a way that is creative, innovative and unique.
I chose to study Graphic Design at Sunderland for many reasons. A couple of reasons was because I live in Sunderland and it was near to home, so it was easier to travel. Furthermore, I had attended open days and summer schools which provided classes on Graphic Design, showcasing what we would be learning which excited me even more! The University offered support like no other University I had attended at open days. They provide various schemes and scholarships such as the graduate scheme. This gave me satisfaction that once I leave University, they still have my back and will still help me throughout my job search. Reassurance is key for me which the University gave and still do. Being a British Bangladeshi student, I saw straight away how diverse the University is and how they celebrate culture and I loved that.
My experience studying Graphic Design is that no two days are ever the same. With it being a broad subject, I learn a new skill mostly every day. At first, I had thought I would be left in the deep end and would not get any support from my lecturers. That was completely wrong! They push me to get out the box and experience new styles and techniques as well as being so supportive with my work. They communicate very well and are always there if I need advice on any work I do.
A typical week when studying is busy but active. I would normally continue with my module by coming in the building, going on the iMacs and using the resources I have in the building to do some sketches, experimentation and development. As there are restrictions currently due to Covid, I have my lessons virtually and then throughout the week I get one to one tutorial from my lecturers (which helps so much!).
The reason why I chose Graphic Design is because, I fell in love with it by doing it as a GCSE at first then college. I love the way how design is in everyday life and how communication is a key part. Design will never grow old, it's famous for its traditional designs, present design and I am sure it will be in the future. It carries on the trend and it’s a key part in anything you do. On the course you get to travel around the UK, I have visited exhibitions and studios in London, attended talks as well as takien part into real life competitions. Professional advice is constant throughout the three years as you get to meet Graphic Designers, attend their lectures and overall gain more knowledge on the creative industry.
