Explore filmmaking, documentary production, directing, cinematography, and scriptwriting or editing. Develop practical skills and theoretical knowledge that'll set you up for your own exciting and rewarding career, turning your creativity into reality.
Through practical projects, you'll develop skills in screenwriting, camera, sound, editing, lighting, colour grading, producing, and directing. Learn from our highly experienced and skilled lecturing team using first-class equipment.
You’ll have access to specialised digital cameras, sound recording equipment, lighting kit, Steadicam rigs, and professional editing software packages such as Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premier Pro, and Da Vinci Resolve.
In the first year – the foundation year – you'll study five modules. After completion of this foundation, you'll then move onto the Film Production honours degree course.
Through lectures, workshops, and project work, you'll learn practical skills and develop your knowledge in a variety of filmmaking roles to set you up for a career in the film and TV industry.
Our teaching methods develop subject-specific knowledge and transferable skills that enhance employability. These include skills in communication, analysis, research, teamwork, writing, and presentations.
You'll be taught via lectures, demonstrations, workshops, seminars, screenings, group and individual projects, and independent learning.
Assessment methods include portfolios of practical work (short films, documentaries, advertisements, music videos, showreels, scripts), production files, essays, examinations, reports, and presentations.
The Integrated Foundation Year is specially designed to support you where you've just missed the grades required for direct entry onto a three-year degree, or if you have relevant work experience and are now looking to broaden your subject knowledge but want more time to develop study skills before starting your degree.
Entry requirements are provided for guidance only and we may offer you an entrance interview which will help us determine your eligibility for your chosen degree. This enables us to consider making you an offer if you're perhaps a mature student who has been out of education for a period of time, or you've gained significant knowledge and skills through employment rather than traditional education.
1. Normally a minimum of three Level 2 qualifications (NVQ, GCSE, or equivalent), including maths and English language at grade C or above** and a minimum of 40 UCAS Tariff points from Level 3 qualifications (e.g. A or AS Levels, T Levels, BTEC certificates/diplomas, access courses, or equivalent) OR
2. Demonstrable evidence of appropriate knowledge and skills acquired from at least three years of post-school work experience.

**If you've studied for a GCSE which has a numerical grade, you'll need to achieve a grade 4 or above. Equivalent alternative qualifications are also accepted, such as Level 2 Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number.

The annual fee for this course is £9,250 if you're from the UK/Ireland/EU settled/pre-settled.
If you're a full-time UK/Irish/EU settled/EU pre-settled student, you may be eligible to receive financial support to cover your fees for the full four years. UK and EU settled students may also be eligible to receive a maintenance loan.

This film production degree prepares you for careers in the film and TV industries. Your training in communication, teamwork, and creativity will be highly relevant to roles in many different businesses and in the public sector.
Our graduates have gained employment working as freelance crew on film sets and TV shows in a variety of roles such as camera trainee, Foley artist, cinematographer, digital content manager, production manager, editor, director, producer, script supervisor, sound recordist, production coordinator, and digital imaging technician.
Previous employers include the BBC, ITV, Pinewood Studios, and a huge variety of independent production companies. Other graduates take a more entrepreneurial route and have set up their own production or media companies.
We actively encourage you to gain relevant work experience while at university. In every year of your course, you'll be guided and encouraged to gain meaningful experience that'll fit around your studies.
You'll undertake a number of practice modules throughout your course, which can include live briefs from clients from outside the University. Get the opportunity to gain production experience with independent production company Fulwell 73 and build up a portfolio of work to show future employers.
Creative Industries Week gives everyone in the Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries the opportunity to participate in a range of projects, workshops, talks, industry visits, and career events. This exciting week encourages interdisciplinary working and broadens your experience to build your confidence and help develop your career path.
