Introduction
The environment and health and safety are major challenges that face the world in the 21st century. If you want to take action, and lead change, then come to Sunderland.
Our postgraduate courses are designed to respond to today's needs. Our MSc Environment and Health and Safety is one of very few that allows you to develop expertise in both environmental management and Health and Safety.
The modules taught cover both health and safety and environment together with a range of skills that can be utilised in both areas. Modules covered include: health & safety, risk assessment, management systems, pollution monitoring and control, environmental impact assessment, life cycle analysis and environmental reporting.
The taught section of the MSc leads to graduate status with IOSH.
The MSc is taught by members of academic staff who are active in both consultancy and research. Research is carried out in the areas of: environmental reporting, life-cycle analysis, air pollution and its effects on health, contaminated land, bioremediation, ecology and health and safety.
One highlight of the MSc is the eight week placement that is offered to all students. This gives students the opportunity to apply the skills they have learnt during the taught modules in a real-life situation. Research projects are typically developed via the placement.
This provides students the opportunity to extend their relationship with work placement providers by a further twelve weeks. Many students have gained employment as a result of the relationships developed during this period of their MSc.
On completion of the MSc students need to complete two years employment and a piece of cpd work in order to apply for chartered status with IOSH. The time spent on placement for the MSc counts towards the two years.
