Introduction

Tourism is a growth area and there are exciting opportunities in managing and developing tourism and hospitality businesses.

You'll study highly relevant modules that cover marketing, destination management, human resources, information management, planning and research, and more.

During the programme you will also develop wider skills in communication, team working, problem solving, application of number, use of information technology, and improving your own learning and work performance. These will not only help you launch your career but also provide a framework for life-long learning.

Entry Requirements

260 points from a minimum of 2 A levels/AVCEs or equivalent (e.g. 1 x AVCE double award).

We accept a maximum of 20 points from Level 3 Key Skills.

We also require three passes at GCSE grade C or above which must include Mathematics and English Language or a minimum of Level 2 Key Skills in Communication, Application of Number.

Access Course: We would require successful completion of a Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education Access programme and that you would have a minimum of GCSE grade C Mathematics and English Language (or have obtained the equivalent as part of your course).

Scottish Highers: Our typical offer is for 260 points.

Irish Leaving Certificate: Our typical offer is for 260 points.

Teaching and Assessment

We use lectures, seminars, tutorials, open and resource-based learning and supervised project and group work to help you learn. Residential field study visits are important for bridging the gap between theory and reality.

Assessment is by coursework, normally including essays, reports, group work, multiple-choice tests, computer based evaluation and seminar presentations, and, in some cases, examinations.

Work Experience

This 'hands-on' programme has been developed in close collaboration with industry consultants regionally, nationally and internationally.

We've developed the programme in close collaboration with industry consultants. You can expect a focus on real-world learning with live project work, local day visits and guest speakers. There are two residential field study visits (at an additional cost) which will add to your existing practical experience.

We maintain strong links with the tourism industry in the North East and, through participation in EU tourism development programmes, with Europe.

Career Opportunities

Recent tourism graduates have gone on to positions within major tourism companies, economic development agencies, tourism development bodies and local authorities.

There are also opportunities in regional and national government in the UK and overseas. Plus, you'll be equipped for many positions in the wider service sector and for moving on to postgraduate research.
