Introduction
This programme allows students who have previously studied radio at Foundation Degree or HND level to increase their qualification to that of a full undergraduate degree.
Students will be able study specialist areas of radio/audio production and develop one of those genres of forms into a major piece of production work in drama, documentary, live broadcasting or audio based Internet content.

Entry Requirements
Students will be expected to have successfully completed an appropriate qualification in radio production, radio broadcasting or a related subject.
HND students should have gained at least 50% merits or distinctions at Level 2.
Each application will be considered by an Admissions Tutor to ensure that students have the right mix of skills required. Some students may be asked to study additional modules to assist this process.

Teaching and Assessment
A range of teaching methods are used from lectures and workshops to one-to-one tutorials and online learning.
Students will be allocated a supervisor for the Practical Project and will be expected to meet them on a regular basis to discuss progress.
Work Experience
There are no formal placements on this programme but students are encouraged to seek work experience in their own time and staff will provide support for this where they can. Students may also wish to become involved in 107 Spark FM.Spark is our own 24/7 award winning community radio station. It is the largest university based station in the UK. Working here you can gain real-life work experience in our radio studios and be heard across Sunderland on FM and worldwide on the internet. Students run Spark FM themselves with tutor support, and they are responsible for all news-gathering, programme production and advertising.
The University already holds a Community Radio Licence and students on the course will be able to engage with the operation of the station at some point. We also have links to other Community, Commercial and BBC stations in the region and beyond. We are members of the Community Media Association and the RadioCentre.
Our resources and our teaching both reflect real world practices and challenges and professional standards are applied to the programmes made as part of course assessment.
Career Opportunities
Students have graduated from the University of Sunderland in radio and are now working in the BBC as Producers, Presenters, Studio Managers and Broadcast Assistants; in Commercial Radio as Presenters, Journalists, News Editors, Commercial Writers and Commercial Producers
We also have graduates working for and running production companies making commercials and jingles for clients around the world!

The course is based within the University’s David Puttnam Media Centre, a purpose built production and teaching centre with modern, professionally designed and constructed radio studios, production spaces and digital field recorders.
This includes 3 self-operating studios with Myriad playout, a radio drama studio, 2 news/editing booths with plans to build further studios to host the full-time radio station.
Students are able to save work on a central server and edit and dub audio in our open access production room.
Recording equipment includes HHB Flash-Mics, Marantz flash recorders and high quality mini-disc recording kits.
