Health Sciences and Well-being Research Beacon

The Health Sciences and Well-being research beacon carries out high quality research into contemporary health issues from the lab through to clinical practice. Based on the principle that most of today's important health issues require a range of skills and expertise, our research is carried out by multi-disciplinary teams that span the fundamental and applied sciences and also commonly include clinicians and practitioners. Thus, our staff come from a wide range of scientific disciplines, including: pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, social sciences, immunology, psychology, sports sciences, and health services research, as well as practitioners from pharmacy, nursing, medicine and allied health professions. In addition to the external expertise we bring to research, we also collaborate with a range of local, national and international partners in industry, academia and health services, thus ensuring that our outputs and products are both locally relevant and have international reach. This approach allows us to address the translational gaps of getting science into products and evidence into practice.

As the School of Pharmacy is one of the largest in the UK, enquiry into the development, testing and use of medicines features strongly in our research. Similarly, as a partner in FUSE, the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health, we have an emphasis on not only putting evidence into practice, but in also researching how best to do this.

Health Sciences research is centred on five inter-related themes, each led by a senior academic researcher. These are:

The translational theme cuts across these to ensure that translation and addressing the translational gaps is at the heart of everything we do.

Over several years, we have developed a culture in which teaching and learning, research and external engagement are inextricably linked to provide a rich and challenging academic environment and a truly exceptional student experience.

Our research is intertwined with our teaching activities, and our postgraduate research students are exposed to the latest technologies, methods and thinking.
