Car travel directions

From North or South, follow the A19 towards Sunderland. Leave the A19 and turn onto the A1231 heading for Sunderland.

For the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's: head East along A1231 and simply follow the brown directional signs for the National Glass Centre which is located within the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St. Peter's.

For City Campus: head East along A1231 and follow signs for City Centre. Continue over Queen Alexandra Bridge and then bear left following signs for City Centre/A1231. Continue past B&Q to the third roundabout where you should take the third exit, following signs for University.


Public transport

Metro light railway

The (External) Nexus Metro is a light railway service that runs across Tyne and Wear.

A typical Metro journey from the City Campus to the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's takes 5 minutes. A typical Metro journey from Newcastle to Sunderland takes 25 minutes.

Newcastle Airport also has a Metro station, making the Metro the easiest way to travel to and from the airport from Sunderland. A typical journey from the airport to Sunderland takes 51 minutes.

The two closest stops to the University of Sunderland are 'St Peter's', for The Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's, and 'University' for City Campus.

Train travel

Sunderland has a well-connected (External) rail service , with regular trains to London, York and Newcastle. A typical journey from London to Sunderland takes approximately 3 hours 30 minutes.


Air travel

(External) Newcastle Airport is the closest international airport. EasyJet, American Airlines, Ryan Air, Air France and Jet2 all have frequent flights to and from Newcastle from a range of destinations. The Metro runs directly to Sunderland from Newcastle International Airport.
