Introduction
The programme allows you to gain broad management skills with a particular focus on Human Resources (HR). Current HR professionals give the following reasons for enjoying their careers: variety, challenge and interest, and the view that HR is at the heart of the business and can make a difference.
The programme opens up a range of options for future employment, ranging from HR generalist posts to roles such as talent acquisition manager, learning and development manager, and international HR manager.
A valuable benefit of this programme is that it leads to professional accreditation with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the UK's leading professional body involved in the management and development of people. For those who develop a lifetime career in Human Resources, the benefit of holding membership of a professional institute has been estimated at £71,000 (CCPMO Economic Impact Report, December 2008).
At Sunderland we give you a practical as well as academic understanding of HR management. In the first year you gain a broad foundation in both HR management and effectiveness in organisations. In the second and third years you develop your skills so that you're ready to work in a profession, while deepening your knowledge in core areas and through modules that you choose in line with your personal interests. Work-based experience is one of the central themes.
There will always be a need for HR professionals because, as organisations often say, 'people are our most valuable resource'. By the end of the programme you can expect to have life-changing skills and knowledge in this area as well as an excellent all round business education.
