Introduction

RUN IN CONJUNCTION WITH SUNDERLAND COLLEGE

The Travel and Tourism industry is still one of the largest single businesses in world commerce and its importance is widely recognised. One of the consequences of its growth is the ever increasing range of job opportunities and career prospects for well qualified and motivated people.

Travel and tourism is a very significant industry: regionally, nationally, within the EU and at the global scale. Together, the travel and tourism industry generates about 11% of world GDP, and 200 million jobs across the global economy. Within the EU, and even on the most conservative basis of estimation, tourism accounts for a greater proportion of the subcontinent's GDP than the building/construction or fuel/power industries; is three times more important than agriculture; and accounts for 5% of all exports.

Tourism is an important sector of the UK economy - total employment in tourism-related industries in the UK is estimated at 1.8-2 million people (6-7% of the workforce), most of which are in SMEs (the government estimates that 80% have a turnover of less than £250,000 per annum). Britain has the fifth largest tourism industry in the world, with export and foreign exchange earnings amounting to £15 billion in 1997, equivalent in scale to motor vehicles and components and larger than North Sea oil. Employment growth was above average in the sector during the 1990s at 30%, and is expected to carry on growing. By 2006 one in five of all new jobs are likely to be in tourism, leisure and related areas, an estimated 300,000 new jobs by 2009.

In the North-East, tourism presently employs over 100,000 people, and has a key role to play in building in the region's image. Nationally, however, the tourism and leisure sector suffers from a severe shortage of management skills. Fewer than one in ten tourism managers hold a relevant qualification and only 5% retain membership of a professional body.

In collaboration with the City of Sunderland College the University of Sunderland is now offering a new Foundation Degree specifically designed for the travel and tourism industry. The FdA Travel and Tourism. The Travel and Tourism degree is aimed at those wishing for a career in the public or private sector of the industry. With our partner college, we are looking to attract applications from people who are motivated and enthusiastic and keen to develop the appropriate skills and achieve a good academic standard.

The course focuses upon core and option units that will provide the underpinning knowledge of business and the specialist knowledge that is required within the industry. The blend of academic and vocational skills will enhance your employability and also allow you to progress to further professional qualifications.

The course recognises the need for foundation degree graduates to be pro-active and versatile in the ways in which they approach new problems and opportunities, working from a sound foundation knowledge of travel and tourism operations management and developmental issues. Travel and tourism graduates will possess generic competencies which will enable them to acquire career positions in travel and tourism or in the broader service sector of the economy.

The City of Sunderland College has a sound history of teaching travel and tourism subjects.
