Introduction

The Masters in Marketing offers a specialist postgraduate qualification based around the application and significance of marketing in the challenging contemporary business and societal environments of the 21st Century.

It is designed for both recent business and management graduates who are looking for a fast track into marketing management and for marketing professionals who wish to further their careers through gaining appropriate qualifications.

As a programme, it develops knowledge, understanding and skills in the exciting discipline that is contemporary marketing.

A programme of guest speakers and company visits will enhance your learning experience, as will the diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences of those taking the MA Marketing programme with you.

Course Content

Stage 1
Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) 60 credits

Delivered in two concentrated modules, the certificate stage of the programme will provide you with the essential concepts, theories and developments of marketing in the context of its strategic dimension.

Student driven in nature, the intensive modules allow for flexibility in the delivery of content so encouraging debate and understanding in the various aspects of marketing management that are covered in the first term.

  • Strategic Marketing Management 1: Context
  • Strategic Marketing Management 2: Application


Stage 2
Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) 60 credits

The diploma stage will develop your knowledge, skills and professional competence in marketing by introducing you to key applications of the discipline. This is reflected in the marketing-centric options made available to students on the programme.

Four option modules (15 credits each) - at least three of which must be from:

  • International Marketing
  • Marketing Intelligence
  • e-Marketing
  • Consumer Research
  • Global Integrated Marketing Communications

A fourth, non-marketing, module can be chosen from a wide variety of subjects, including:

  • Enterprise and Entrepreneurship
  • Service Operations Management
  • Innovation and Growth
  • Project Management
  • Managing Diversity


Stage 3

Masters (MA) 60 credits

Throughout the programme you will be encouraged to develop your research skills and expand your understanding of marketing and its impact on both management decision-making and society as a whole. This is particularly true of the masters stage where you will undertake a dissertation based on an element of contemporary marketing.

Entry Requirements

Applications are welcome from holders of an honours degree at 2:2 (or above) or the equivalent from a recognised institution.

Applicant's first degree should be in a business-related discipline where the course of study incorporated marketing as a distinct subject.

Holders of the CIM Postgraduate Diploma may be offered some advanced standing, potentially enabling part-time study, at the discretion of the Programme Leader.

Alternatively, applicants may possess relevant work experience or professional qualifications recognised as being the equivalent of an honours degree. Applicants who do not meet the above requirements may be exceptionally considered at the discretion of the Programme Leader.

If you are an overseas applicant whose first language is not English you will be required to produce evidence of competence in English. This will normally be a score of 6.5 on the British Council International Language Testing Scheme (IELTS) test or a Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 575/232 (paper/computer based). For those applicants who have taken the new Internet-based TOEFL test (IBT) a score of TOEFL IBT 90 will be required.

All international students will be re-tested to assess their level of English during the Induction Programme.

Teaching and Assessment

The delivery of the programme is by a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, presentations and case study exercises.

In order to develop their marketing management and decision-making skills, students are encouraged to actively participate in class discussions and problem-solving exercises.

At an early stage in the programme, students are formed into Peer Learning Support Groups (PLSGs).

These cross-cultural groups are designed to encourage additional mutual study support and a further tier of independent working.

Assessment methods vary depending on the subjects being delivered.

However, students on the MA Marketing can expect to be assessed by a combination of individual written assignments, presentations, portfolio development and time constrained assignments.
