Introduction

Click here to go to the Combined Subjects Homepage.

The Combined Subjects degree provides an opportunity to study Law with another subject as a minor or dual combination.

The study of law at degree level is valued because of the skills which graduates will, by definition, have acquired on completion.

These skills are transferable outside of the legal professions.

Minor and Dual Routes
The principle objective in the creation of these routes is to allow students to focus on a limited number of legal fields. All students must complete Legal Institutions and Method which will introduce students to the basic building blocks onto which all law modules are founded.

Students are then required to choose between Contract Law, Criminal Law and Human Rights.

The decision made here is of fundamental importance to their studies in Levels 2 and 3 and it is recognised therefore that appropriate advice must be provided during Level 1 induction.

As noted above these modules provide the conceptual basis for many of the option modules to follow in later years of the programme and the pre-requisites in place on these optional modules reflect the importance of the choice made at this time.

Level 2 and 3 students are offered a much greater degree of optionality. Students will again be provided with academic counselling to assist them in their choices.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching encompasses a range of activities including lectures, seminars, and workshops. Within individual modules, students will be exposed to a range of activities including case studies, practical exercises, multi-media presentations and external visits. External speakers are also invited into some class sessions.

Assessment is a combination of coursework and examination (all foundation subjects are required to have a formal examination as part of the assessment). Typically coursework involve researching specific points of law and undertaking a critical evaluation and/or practical application of that law.

Work Experience

No formal placements are offered as part of the programme. The Law Team however works with Business Bridge and where appropriate short-term placements or work experience opportunities arise, students are advised accordingly.

Students may also wish to pursue work experience opportunities on their own which might complement their course of study.

Career Opportunities

Employment opportunities for Sunderland graduates are excellent as the degree provides a variety of transferable skills which are valuable to employers.

The Combined Subjects degree is NOT a qualifying law degree. The QLD is fundamentally intended to address the academic stage of qualification as a solicitor or barrister. On completion, students are eligible to progress to the professional stage (either the LPC or BVC).  Those who do not wish to transfer however, are still able, subject to the selection of appropriate option modules at Levels 2 and 3, to acquire qualified Paralegal status, allowing them to apply for such positions immediately on graduation.

Students on the all Combined Subjects routes are also eligible to progress onto a range of alternative postgraduate programmes such the LL.M or PGCE.

Where students decide on completion of their programme that they wish to pursue a formal legal practice careers, they may enrol on a Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) which is a Law Society approved conversion course for non-law graduates. This one-year full-time programme covers the foundation subjects and allows graduates to progress from there to the LPC or BVC.

For those not wishing to pursue the route to practice, there are a number of alternative career options available.
