Introduction

BA (Hons) Business and Management generic route is designed to provide an excellent all round management education.

It suits best those who wish to gain an in-depth understanding of management theories and practice. In essence, the degree emphasises abilities to organise, monitor, control and develop best practice in the management of organisations whilst providing a thorough understanding of the business environment.

Throughout the Business and Management programme you develop both academic knowledge and practical skills. You will also have the option to choose optional modules to suit your own personal interests.

This programme produces managers capable of managing effectively across the broad range of disciplines required in today's rapidly changing business environment.

Building on a sound base of training in the essentials of business law, accounting and the world economy you gain a firm grounding in key management skills and techniques found in financial, strategic and knowledge management.

The Year 3 optional placement provides practical management experience.

Flexibility Across Routes:

The programme is designed to allow flexibility and transition between the two modes. After the first level, you have the opportunity to move to any of these Sunderland Business School programmes:

Entry Requirements

Our typical offer will be 260 points from a minimum of 2 A levels/AVCEs or equivalent (e.g. 1 x AVCE double award).

We accept a maximum of 20 points from Level 3 Key Skills.

We also require three passes at GCSE grade C or above which must include Mathematics and English Language or a minimum of Level 2 Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number.

Access Course: We would require successful completion of a Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education Access programme and that you would have a minimum of GCSE grade C Mathematics and English Language (or have obtained the equivalent as part of your course).

Scottish Highers: Our typical offer is for 260 points.

Irish Leaving Certificate: Our typical offer is for 260 points.

Teaching and Assessment

All business programme modules are delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops.

You are encouraged to develop as an independent learner, supported by a variety of facilities including extensive library provision, online databases, CD-ROM technology and full Internet access. Group work is also a key aspect of teaching and learning in the Business School.

Assessment is varied, and usually includes coursework. Specific methods will include reports, case studies, presentations, essays, phase tests and time-constrained assessments.

Work Experience

Year 3 you may undertake a 48-week business placement. The placement year is an important part of the programme as it provides real world experience and allow you to put into practice the skills and knowledge you have acquired in the classroom.

Placements can be taken throughout the UK and the rest of the world. Our industrial placement unit will help you to find suitable placements. The organisation can be large or small and in the public, private or charities sector. Your employer normally pays you for this year.

Recent examples of placement employers include IBM, Procter and Gamble, Nissan, Nestle and ICL. The Business School has links with many organisations ranging from blue chip multinationals to local small businesses.

Career Opportunities

Business and Management Studies graduates are well placed to pursue successful careers in a wide range of areas.

You will be equipped to make an immediate contribution in a broad range of production and service management positions, giving a wide choice of career options and ensuring rapid integration and career progression.

Graduates have taken positions as trainee managers and administrators in all areas of business, and as civil servants and teachers.

The degree forms a sound basis for both management training and continuous professional development programmes. A number of students advance to undertake a Masters qualification.

Our libraries provide computers, printing, photocopying, and inter-library loans.

Sunderland also has an extensive electronic library collection, which means you can access much of the information you need online. You will also benefit from access to 500 computer workstations of the David Goldman Informatics Centre which offers the latest software packages - open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
