Introduction

The organisation of events like the Olympics, music festivals, and business conferences is varied and fast-moving work. BA (Hons) Events Management is designed to help you succeed in this growing sector.

The programme is structured to provide you with an in-depth grounding in relevant theories, ranging from marketing to event experience. You will also gain first-hand experience in planning and managing events, with more responsibility given to you each year.

There will be opportunities to visit and analyse a range of regional, national and international events and companies. These opportunities will add to your solid understanding of the conference and events market.

After the second year you will have the chance to spend a full year on a paid work placement. This will provide valuable experience and allow you to put your new skills and knowledge into practice.

At Sunderland we place great value on employability skills, which not only prepare you for the workplace but also make you very competitive within today's job market. Our assessments help provide you with further skills necessary to work in the event sector, such as developing and presenting event concepts, sponsorship and fundraising strategies, event/conference feasibility studies and other project reports.

During your studies you will benefit from the outstanding facilities at Sunderland, including state-of-the-art libraries and learning resources. Work Experience

In Year 3 you may undertake a 48-week placement. The School offers a wide range of opportunities for you to develop work-based skills via a work placement and industrial project. Placements are highly recommended as they invariably result in greater self-confidence and technical expertise. You will gain an enhanced understanding of the business environment and develop transferable skills.

Recent placement employers include IBM, BT, the European Parliament, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Nissan.

Placements are typically last 48 weeks, are paid (average salary of £12,000 a year), and are supervised by the University as well as managers at the placement organisation. Many students have been offered a permanent position as a result of their work placement performance.

In addition the University runs a scheme called Business Bridge, which provides opportunities to undertake paid work placements either in your spare time or after graduation. There is also the chance to undertake voluntary work with Community Bridge which, again, gives you some extra experience to make your CV sparkle.
