Introduction
This part-time route is available in both on-campus and off-campus modes.
The MA TESOL has been designed to enhance your abilities through a knowledge of the theroretical and practical aspects of the English language classroom.
The programme will help you stand out when you apply for jobs or promotion, and is suitable for teachers in both private and state sectors. It also includes a practical teaching module designed to cater for applicants with no prior teaching experience.
The high level of flexibility within the programme is reflected in the opportunities for you to choose assignments related to your particular areas of experience and interest.
The University of Sunderland provides a high level of student support. Your tutors within the University will maintain contact with you via email, telephone and written communication and, if you study on campus, also through face-to-face meetings.
The programme will be followed through to MA, or you may wish to study only for the intermediate awards of Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) or Postgraduate Diploma (PgD). These are choices you can make as you progress through the programme.
Course Content
Stage 1
Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) 60 credits
You study the following modules at the same time, over 15 weeks:
- The Principles and Practice of English Language Teaching
- Linguistics for TESOL
- Practical Teaching
Stage 2
Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) 60 credits
During the diploma phase you will complete three modules from the following:
Core module:
- Research Methods in Language Learning and Teaching
Option modules:
- Theories of Second/Foreign Language Learning
- The Management of Change in English Language Teaching (on-campus students only)
- Language Learning and Educational Technology (on-campus students only)
- Language, Culture and Power (off-campus students only)
Modules may vary from year to year.
Stage 3
Masters (MA) 60 credits
- Dissertation - you complete a dissertation of 15,000 words on a TESOL- related topic of your choice.
Entry Requirements
All applicants should hold a first degree or equivalent and should have excellent English language skills. Applicants who first language is not English must show evidence of IELTS level 6.5, TOEFL 575 or equivalent.
For the practical teaching module, distance learning applicants are supposed to find an institution in their context where they can teach and DVD record an English language class and also observe such classes.

Teaching and Assessment
If you choose the off-campus route you will have online access to the required materials. We will also support you through online tutorials, email, faxes (if appropriate) and telephone calls. You will still have full access to the University of Sunderland library facilities.
Assessment on the entire programme will include written assignments, observing and teaching English Language classes in your context, oral/written presentations and a dissertation.
Career Opportunities
A Masters qualification can enhance your promotion prospects and improve your employability.
For example, the programme could equip you to take up a role in managing change in education or leading a department or school.
