David Parfitt

Thursday 23 January 2014

Film producer and former Chair of BAFTA, David Parfitt is Sunderland’s only Oscar winner. David will present his new film, The Wiper Times, starring Michael Palin, and take questions from the audience about the film, and his career.

David began his stage career with Sunderland Empire Theatre Society in 1969 but he gave up acting in the late 1980s to concentrate on production. He has produced many British films including Henry V, Peter's Friends, Swan Song, Much Ado About Nothing, The Madness of King George, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Twelfth Night, The Wings of the Dove, Shakespeare in Love, Gangs of New York, I Capture the Castle, Chasing Liberty, A Bunch of Amateurs and My Week with Marilyn.

He was Chairman of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) (2008-2010) and in 1998 won the Academy Award for Best Picture for Shakespeare in Love.
