Reg Vardy Gallery

The Reg Vardy Gallery supports exhibitions, projects and events that explore contemporary art practice with a focus on research, experimentation and collaboration. The programmes are developed to enable artists to experiment and develop new work for the gallery; explore curatorial issues and consider a range of ideas around contemporary culture. The Reg Vardy Gallery also provides an informal space for lively debate through a range of events and open discussions for the artistic, academic and regional audience.

Community Projects

The gallery actively participates with the community, from schools to further education colleges and special interest groups in Sunderland.  The gallery has developed a variety of projects to enrich their relationship with the community, including Canstruction, Inner Light and the Annual Great Pumpkin Carving Competition.

  • Canstruction, December 2006 - Initially created by the Society for Design Administration (NYC), Canstruction combines the spirit of a design/build event with a unique way to promote social welfare. Teams of community organisations in collaboration with professional designers will create two massive sculptures in Sunderland city centre made from over 10,000 tins of food. After their exhibition, the sculptures will be dismantled and the tinned food is donated to soup kitchens and homeless shelters in England throughout the holiday season.
  • Inner Light, December 2006 - Inner Light is founded on the belief that modest means inspire the greatest rewards. With pencils and plain sheets of paper this project invites individuals from all over the world to draw what they imagine or believe their souls looks like. This global drawing project and Canstruction are a part of Shine, Sunderland¿s Winter Festival supported by Culture 10.  Reg Vardy Gallery¿s imprint Art Editions North will be producing a publication about Soul, a selection of 500 drawings from the Inner Light project.
  • The 5th Annual Great Pumpkin Carving Competition, 31 October 2007 - Inviting one hundred children from local schools, the Vardy education team once again undertook the largest free pumpkin carving competition in Britain. The carved pumpkins were exhibited and judged by the Deputy Mayor of Sunderland.
