A Journey in Glass and Ceramics

The exhibition features work in progress by students from around the world studying MA Glass, MA Ceramics and research degrees (MPhil/PhD) in Glass and Ceramics at the University of Sunderland. This has been an important opportunity for students part-way through their courses to take an experimental approach and test their developing ideas in the exciting venue of Bede’s World Museum. The students have responded to the site and in many cases this has led to new approaches and unexpected ideas. As well as viewing works in the museum gallery you will be able to see artwork sited around the museum. This creates a visual journey and offers students a unique ‘laboratory’ to experiment with diverse ways of displaying their work. We hope that this exhibition will extend perceptions of how glass and ceramics can be used creatively!

All the work was produced in the University of Sunderland’s Glass and Ceramics state-of-the-art studios based in the National Glass Centre.  The work is made using a variety of traditional and modern techniques including glass painting, ceramic slip casting, water-jet cutting, glass blowing, glass casting, lamp worked glass, and glass fusing. This blend of traditional and contemporary seems fitting given that St Paul’s church nearby is the site of the earliest stained glass in Western Europe.

The exhibition is curated by internationally renowned curator and writer on glass Prof Sylva Petrova. Contributing artists:

Tom Arckle, Ruth Bratt, Marian Brenes Cerda, Minlu Chen, Erin Dickson, Katja Filmus, Vicky Higginson, Kelly Leone Lee, Mimmi Trinh, Rebecca Robson, Helma Rudd, Jennie Speirs Grant, Ayako Tani, Anna Vesele, Cheng xin, Cao Yu

These students have agreed to make themselves available as student representatives for any press interviews and/or photos.
