Andrew Livingstone Parallax View

The event runs from 00:00 on 6th Mar 2010 until 00:00 on 9th May 2010

A contemporary approach to the Tullie House porcelain collection

6 March - 9 May

Andrew Livingstone, a member of our Glass and Ceramics team, is an artist with an international reputation for exploring the meanings to be found in combining hand-crafted ceramics with found objects, performance and new technologies. Over the past year, the Andrew has been studying and documenting the Williamson collection of porcelain to ask the question: ‘What might it look like now?’ From his research, Andrew has created an exciting new body of work which uses formal and narrative elements of the collection to reflect back upon contemporary society, to explore the value attributed to objects and to examine the demise of the ceramic industry in the UK.

Animation by Laura Simpson

Andrew worked with our animation students to literally bring the plates to life, as the above example shows. Parallax View promises to provide a fresh perspective on Tullie House’s porcelain collection and to shatter all preconceptions of ceramic exhibitions.

The Robert Hardy Williamson collection comprises over eight-hundred pieces of 18th and early 19th century English porcelain from key English porcelain factories. The owner of a successful ship-building business at Harrington in West Cumbria, Williamson amassed this important collection from around the time of his marriage in 1908. The collection was bequeathed to Tullie House Museum in 1940 and a selection of it can ordinarily be seen, in the cases from Williamson’s home, on the staircase of Old Tullie House.

The Jump Films

The event runs from 00:00 on 5th Mar 2010 until 00:00 on 8th Apr 2010

Reg Vardy Gallery
Ashburne House
Fri 5 March – Thu 8 April
FREE

Opening times: Tue – Fri 10am–5pm, Sat by appointment (Tel: 0191 515 2128)
AV Late Shows: Tue 9 March, 6–8pm

The Jump Films explore the relationship between performance art and the documentation that survives the physical event. Each film documents a dramatic jump, or fall, captured at thousands of frames per second and shot with a high-speed camera that is normally used in scientific research or car-crash testing. The three films are each shot in contradictory styles and at different speeds. One film seems to document an abortive suicide attempt, another a stunt from a Hollywood movie, and the third as an absurd Olympic event. Originally made on 16mm film, this new HD presentation re-stages the work in a new medium.
On Tue 9 March at 3pm Mark Neville will give a public talk at the gallery. RSVP at rsvp@ccaprojects.org.uk.

Exhibition curated by AV Festival 10 & CIRCA Contemporary Art Projects: Sam Watson and Adam Phillips
Supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England

Four of our MA Fine Art graduates are participating in the prestigious MA and Other Postgraduate Contemporary Art Show at the Atkinson Gallery, Millfield.

Mau Chatterjee, Ann Williams, Dominic Campbell and Geoff Simpson, who all graduated in 2009, have been chosen from 16 of the top Art institutions around the country to exhibit their work at the gallery. Showcasing the work of students who express particularly fresh and innovative ideas, the exhibition challenges the norm with wildly stimulating and thought provoking art that attempts to push the boundaries and excite the viewer. A show of such distinction provides a unique opportunity to see the current and latest movements in the art world, including innovative work in painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and film.
