Department of Media and Cultural Studies

The Department of Media and Cultural Studies, led by Professor Guy Starkey, is based in the David Puttnam Media Centre. Located at the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's on the banks of the River Wear, the David Puttnam Media Centre is home to one of the most vibrant and well-equipped Media Schools in the country. Offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, the media and cultural studies provision has been rated 'excellent' by the Quality Assurance Agency. It has a strong research profile, close links with all the media industries and a reputation for producing highly employable graduates. Wherever possible our degree programmes are accredited by professional media organisations.

Students have the opportunity to work on our award-winning radio station, Spark FM, and their own page in the local evening newspaper. The state of the art facilities - among the best in Britain - include two TV studios, four digital radio studios, a 200-seat cinema and a host of video editing suites and journalism/PR workshops equipped with the latest design and database software.
