Design
Sunderland's Design programmes have an international reputation for exceptional creativity. Past graduates have gone on to work as animators and model makers for Aardman, as designers for the Harry Potter films, Lord of the Rings trilogy and Bond movies, as well as winning a raft of international design competitions. The new Design Centre at Sunderland, recently opened by the Chairman of the UK Design Council Sir George Cox, is a wonderfully vibrant environment in which to work, with staff and students who are passionate about design.
With our philosophy of encouraging each individual to develop their own creative voice, through a range of traditional and digital media, we develop design professionals who are highly employable, and have gone on to work for some of the best companies in the world. Indeed we have some of the best relevant graduate employment rates in the sector.
Our students regularly win major national and international design awards such as the Europrix or Royal Television Society awards, and are well recognised by the creative industries for their very high calibre. The Design Centre hosts international conferences, exhibitions and symposia, with acclaimed invited speakers from around the world.
Most staff are actively engaged in design research that feeds back into teaching. We are highly ranked for the quality of our research and have a range of PhD students carrying out cutting edge research in Design. Our Design staff exhibit their work internationally and are also published authors of papers at some of the best international conferences.
Seven undergraduate degrees, five Masters and PhD's operate in the newly refurbished Design Centre building in the heart of Sunderland. Our students enjoy unique opportunities for specialising in cutting edge design as well as studying across design disciplines.
