Dr Tim Brennan

Biography

Tim Brennan was born in 1966 and studied at The Slade School of Fine Art in 1990. He has exhibited internationally since 1988 and has made a significant pedagogic contributions to Dartington College of Arts and Design (Vsual Performance 1992-95), Goldsmiths (MA Curating 1996-1999) and UoS (2000 to present). In 2000 Brennan was one of the first practitioners to receive a three year AHRB Fellowship in Creative and Performing Arts. Residencies have included those with The National Maritime Museum (2002), The British Museum (2003) and Mass Observation, University of Sussex/UWN (2009). Over the last two decades he has developed a methodology based on the guided walk and conversation as art, which he refers to as the manoeuvre. This activity is built on academic research to form new imaginative reflections upon the ways in which we `do history'.

He has been described as one of the most important practitioners to contribute to the social and political role of contemporary art.

Brennan is Head of Arts & Design at the University of Sunderland.

Research Interests

Tim Brennan (PhD) is engaged in research into place, politics and the 'doing' of history through the use of the guided walk form, performance, photographs, painting, writing and as a 'documentation artist' with museum's and archives. His practice is underpinned by a close analysis of the performative and the performed to create new forms of critical imaginative work.

Research Activities

Brennan has been at the forefront of debates concerning the use walking in art for over 20 years. He is a founder member of the research grouping W.A.L.K.. Recent activities have included: 'Vedute Manoeuvre' - a critical tour of Piazza.S.Marco at the Venice Biennale (2011) and the publication 'Enchiridion, three manoeuvres in NE Scotland'. 2011 will also see his research surface as a series of walking tours designed for cross platform mobile devices.
