Research Interests

Hutchinson's practice has expanded to embrace a wide variety of media. He runs a studio in Newcastle, has ongoing: billboard, animation, 3d computer modeling print, proggy mats and photographic projects, has worked with architects on regeneration projects for Ouseburn (Newcastle) and Roker and Seaham (Sunderland) and collaborated on sound and performance works as one half of H+M.

For The Ouseburn he designed an approx 3mx3mx3m stainless steel work called `Corral'. The 3 dimensional Corral is primarily a fusion of form and function, part sculpture part bike rack. Inspired by a trip to Mini Hollywood, in Almeria Spain, yet also drawing on associations with horse riding in the Ouseburn Valley.

Corral is a conceptual development from an earlier work in welded aluminum, `Hanging Pixels' exhibited at `Abstracting from Reality' curated by David Thorp in the Millennium Galleries Sheffield 2007. Corral was designed using Google sketch up software and built by Mikoengineering, based in Walker. Corral was developed through a commissioning process involving Northern Print, Commissions North, Priority Sites and Chipchase Architects and is located outside the Media Exchange in the Ouseburn Valley Newcastle upon Tyne.

His use of digital technology and its various applications to fine art has been exhibited in Unit 24 (London), Berlin Liste, Cite Museum (Paris), BuildMuseet, (Sweden) and The Museum of Craft and Folk Art (San Francisco).

James Hutchinson is an artist who transforms images, which are informed, derived and retained from his exposure to everyday events and images.
