Design plays an essential role in our everyday lives - from the way we communicate with each other, to the way we interact with our environment. That's probably why design is one of the fastest growing industries in the UK. Here at Sunderland, the employment rates of our design graduates are among the highest in the UK for any art and design institution.
Our courses are as exciting, challenging and dynamic as the industry itself. You will develop technical mastery and benefit from state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, but most of all you will be in an environment filled with creative thinkers of the highest calibre. You will gain experience of the industry first-hand with our links to the very best design businesses, real life professional projects and visiting speakers with national and international reputations.
You will be based in the Design Centre, a dedicated and 'designed' space that has benefited from over £1.5million investment in the last two years, and by the time you graduate from Sunderland, you'll be well placed to get a job in the ever-expanding creative industries. We have a philosophy: to encouraging you to develop your own creative voice through a range of traditional and digital media. We develop design professionals who are highly employable and have gone on to work for some of the best companies in the world.
The Design Centre hosts international conferences and exhibitions, with acclaimed invited speakers from every sphere of design activity. Our staff are actively engaged in design research, which feeds back into teaching, and we have a range of PhD students carrying out cutting edge research in design. Our staff exhibit their work internationally and are also published authors of papers at some of the best international conferences.
Through our links with industry you can begin to develop valuable insight and involvement with the world of work. Sunderland courses offer opportunities for work experience and professional engagement with the design industry. You will also be encouraged to enter competitions and take part in live projects. Final year students exhibit at New Designers and the Design and Art Direction exhibition in London. Students are frequently offered employment at these graduate showcases, beating other design graduates nationally to the top jobs. Employers are impressed by the high levels of creativity, skills and knowledge of Sunderland design graduates.
