The study of film, media and culture is an exploration of the relationships between film, media and society. In a media-saturated culture, developing a critical awareness of media and film is crucial to our understanding of contemporary society. If you are curious about a wide range of film, media and popular culture and want to develop your understanding, then our courses are for you.
Film, media and culture are exciting and important areas to study with a very broad range of approaches. You will be able to select modules from a wide range of subjects including popular music, reality TV, cyberculture, Asian Cinema, European cinema and black popular culture, as well as Hollywood cinema. You can also explore star systems, institutions, sexual cultures, and celebrity culture, as well as audiences and sub-cultures. You will be taught by a lively and enthusiastic team, in fact, you will find some are authors of the key textbooks in their field. Our staff are also actively engaged in research which feeds into their teaching. You can find out more about the media department's research at our Centre for Research in Media and Cultural Studies.
Our students are diverse and our courses do not require prior educational experience in film, media or cultural studies. You will be encouraged to be inquisitive and engaged, keen to expand your horizons and open to new ideas. We will expect you to have a strong curiosity about what is going on around you, and to keep up to date with current film releases and television programmes. You will be encouraged to develop good people skills, strong writing skills and the ability to act on your own initiative.
Many of our graduates have succeeded in a range of jobs, including work in television, radio, advertising, teaching, and the voluntary sector, whilst others have pursued postgraduate study. You will develop transferable skills that are invaluable to a range of careers from being a film critic to teaching or working in public relations. Recent graduates have gained employment in the BBC, Channel 4, Sky TV, MTV, Radio 1, local and national newspapers and radio stations.
