Professor Kevin Petrie
Team Leader Glass & Ceramics |
Kevin studied Illustration at the University of Westminster, Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art and for a PhD at the University of the West of England. Known for his books Glass and Print and Ceramic Transfer Printing, Kevin has lectured and taught internationally. Kevin oversees our key agendas of student experience, employability, student opportunities, staff research and its impact on teaching, artist support and especially works with research students. |

Dr Jack Dawson
History and Critical Studies |
Jack is an art historian and subject leader for Historical and Critical Studies. He is an author and curator with a specific interest in contemporary craft theory and the relationship between Fine Art and Craft practice. He has written extensively on aspects of 20th century Scandinavian art glass and the role of the artist in industry. As well as teaching at undergraduate level Jack is also supervisor to a number of PhD research students. |

Professor Sylva Petrova

Sylva is an internationally profiled curator and researcher, specialising in contemporary glass practice. She has juried many distinguished competitions in Japan, Australia, the USA, France, Germany, and the UK. Over the years she has published five books, contributed to forty five others, curated 48 international shows, and has also written over 100 essays for catalogues and journals on subject of art in glass. |

Colin Rennie
BA (Hons) Glass & Ceramics Programme Leader |
Colin has been working with glass since 1992 as a medium for creating sculptual works. His expertise lies in hot glass, cold glass working, computer aided modelling and waterjet cutting. Scientific ideas and processes inspire his research. Drawing from molecular biology, systems biology, and cosmology, he likes to look for crossovers in fields of science that are often very separate. |

Dr Andrew Livingstone MA Ceramics Programme Leader |
Andrew lectures on the BA and MA Glass and Ceramics programmes and currently supervises 13 PhD students. He gained a BA (Hons) in Ceramics from Camberwell School of Art, London, an MA in Applied Arts and a PhD from the University of Ulster, Belfast. He has exhibited his work internationally including exhibitions at The Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC and the Garth Clark Gallery, New York. |

Cate Watkinson
Subject Leader in Architectural Glass |
Cate studied 3-D Design in Glass with Ceramics at Sunderland Polytechnic. Cate worked in Cambridge and the Channel Islands before returning to the North East to set up her architectural glass studio. Cate continues to run her business, Watkinson Glass Associates, while teaching part-time at the University. Cate designs and makes architectural glass to commission. This ranges from decorative glass panels for private buildings, etched glass screens for offices, to street furniture and major public sculpture commissions. |

Inge Panneels
Senior Lecturer |
Inge has a BA (Hons) and Masters in Design from Edinburgh College of Art. She established IDAGOS glass studio in 1998 working with clients such as BT, Lloyds TSB, NHS, Museum of Liverpool and has been teaching part-time since 2006. Inge teaches Professional Practice, informed by her experience in freelance practice. Her skills include kiln techniques (fusing, slumping, pate-de-verre, casting) and surface treatment (sandblasting, etching, cutting, engraving) and working with site issues (working to a brief, sampling, installation and fixings). |

Jeffrey Sarmiento
MA Glass Programme Leader |
Jeff is area leader for print and waterjet in Glass and Ceramics and teaches elements of hot and kiln glass. An MFA graduate from Rhode Island School of Design, his research combines these techniques in the making of glass art that responds to ethnic contexts. He has been a recipient of the Research Councils UK Academic Fellowship, a Fulbright Fellowship to Denmark, and was a finalist for the Bombay Sapphire prize. |

Tim Betterton Senior Glass and Ceramics Technician |
Tim graduated in Glass & Ceramics 3D Design at Sunderland Polytechnic in 1986, and since then he has worked within the Glass & Ceramics department at the University of Sunderland. Over the years, Tim has worked on many projects with artists, ranging from producing cast glass sculptures to conservation work on the Royal Albert Memorial in London. |

Robert Winter
Ceramics Technician |
With an MA from the University of Sunderland, Robert has a vast amount of experience in art and industry. Over the past five years, Robert has been working with ceramics and glass producers in poorer parts of the world, including Asia and South America. In partnership with fair-trade organisations both in the UK and abroad, Robert has shared his design and technical expertise with producers in India, Peru, Bolivia and Vietnam. Robert also makes his own range of contemporary porcelain. |

James Maskrey
Glass Technician |
James has over 20 years experience working in glass industry and education and is qualified with a BA(hons) and MA from the University of Sunderland. He has facilitated work for many artists and organisations, and has worked as a visiting lecturer on the BA programme. Since 2004 he has been associated with Northlands Creative Glass in Scotland as a gaffer, instructor and teaching assistant and has recently been working with Traidcraft as a design and technical consultant. He has exhibited his own artwork widely in the UK, USA and in the Czech Republic. |

Erin Dickson
Waterjet Technician |
Erin graduated RIBA I from the Architectual Association in 2009 and completed her MA at the University of Sunderland in 2010. After receiving AHRC funding in 2011, Erin is now a PhD student researching uses of new technology in glass for architectual applications, particularly focusing on light and distortion. She uses her skills in 3D modelling, CAD drawing and machining to facilitate artist projects. |

Stephen Beardsell
Glass Technician |
In 2001, Steve graduated from the University of Sunderland with a BA in Glass and Ceramics. After this, he achieved a MA from the University of Sunderland. Currently, Steve works as a technician on weekends and runs his own studio in the National Glass Centre. He produces small works and large scale sculptures in blown, hot cast and polished glass with mixed media. |

Paul Adamson
IT and AV Technician |
Paul qualified with BSc(Hons) Computing and a MSc IT Management in 2003, both from the University of Sunderland. After graduating, Paul spent time working at the Ministry of Defence before setting up an IT repair company in Sunderland, which he still runs on a part-time basis. His skills and technical expertise include computing, electronics, graphic design and image manipulation, plotting and cutting and ceramic and glass digital printing. |

Abi Fullerton
Student Experience Officer |
Abi has the responsibility to maintain and improve the student experience for every student in our Faculty, providing them with someone to talk to in confidence about any problems or queries. Abi can advise on processes within the Faculty such as referred/deferred work, taking a leave of absence, changing course or withdrawing. For specialist help, she can signpost to our counsellors, financial counsellors and health and wellbeing or disability support team. |
