Jessica Irena Smith
`Real world' experience leading to self-employment - Jessica Irena SmithJessica Irena Smith came to the University of Sunderland to study a BA (Hons) in Glass & Ceramics. She then went on to complete an MA in Glass, part-time over three years.
The good reputation of the course attracted Jessica, from County Durham, to come and study in Sunderland. Jessica said, "The facilities and equipment for glass were excellent as was the practical guidance, particularly from the technicians. There were lots of additional opportunities that came up such as extra curricular commissions and competitions. I also found the opportunity to join Creativitiworks, a small incubator for creative businesses run by the University, invaluable for learning about the business side of things."
Since graduating in 2009, Jessica has worked full-time as a self employed artist and designer. Her work is represented by a number of galleries throughout the UK, including London and Edinburgh, and she has exhibited in a number of shows and exhibitions. Jessica is continuing to raise her profile and enter competitions - showing recently at the Saatchi Gallery as part of an international art competition.
"I found the general support and guidance has helped me the most in my career," she added. "The advice and reference from my tutor enabled me to get a grant from the Arts Council North East to buy a kiln. I was also able to build up my CV by competing in external competitions and commissions which were publicised through the course."
Even though she now works from home Jessica still feels welcome at the university and regularly pops into to seek advice from the staff at the National Glass Centre.
When asked what she would say to new students, Jessica said, "The time goes by very fast! Take advantage of as many opportunities as possible. Ask lots of questions, even though it can seem a little daunting at first - staff and technicians are very knowledgeable and experienced and can always work out the best way to do something, or make useful suggestions."
