Getting to Sunderland

This year's event is being held at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland, adjacent to the University's Sir Tom Cowie Campus on England's North-East coast.  Sunderland is easily accessible by car, train, local public transport and flights via Newcastle International Airport.

The National Glass Centre is well signposted from and best accessed via the A1231 turning from the A19. 

If traveling from the South via the A1: 
Leave the A1 at turning for Sunderland (A690) and follow signs for the City Centre. At the junction with the A19, join this road and head North, towards Newcastle and the Tyne Tunnel. Stay on the A19, until the turning for 'Sunderland North' and the Nissan car plant (A1231) and follow this road into the city. (About 3 miles)

If traveling from the North via the A1:
Leave the A1, just past the Angel of North at the Sunderland exit. You will join the A1231 here and you should follow this road through Washington into Sunderland. 

Following the A1231 Wessington Way will take you to the Queen Alexandra Bridge. At this roundabout follow road markings for Roker, Stadium of Light and the National Glass Centre (NGC). Once you've passed the Stadium, you will enter a one-way system. keep following the signs for NGC and you will emerge at a Junction, where the road bends right. Turn left here, following signs for the NGC and 'Seafront'. At the next roundabout, turn right and go down the hill - the NGC is straight in front of you. 

Rail Travel

Sunderland is served by a direct rail service from London Kings Cross via York Thirsk and Northallerton, 4 times a day operated by Grand Central Rail. Additional, frequent services are also available via Newcastle from London and Scotland on the East Coast Mainline, Cross-Country services to Scotland, the Midlands and South West and local rail to Leeds, Manchester and the North-West. You can then travel to Sunderland via the frequent Tyne and Wear Metro, which calls at the St Peters station a short walk from the NGC.

Air Travel

Our nearest Airport is Newcastle International, which is served by major airlines such as British Airways, Emirates, Easyjet and KLM - with good connections to London and key European destinations. Travel back to Sunderland is via the metro system and takes about an hour.
