Research
In the latest Research Assessment Exercise (2008) ten of the sixteen areas submitted by the University were identified as carrying out 'world-leading' research.
These results build on the success achieved in the last exercise, when Sunderland was named the best new university in the UK for the range and quantity of its research. Sunderland was once again the leading university in the region in this area.
The University, which submitted the most staff of the new universities in the region, was recognised as carrying out 'world-leading' research in Computer Science, Pharmacy, Environment, Education, Media, English, History, Automotive, Art & Design, and Tourism. One in four of the University's academic staff is engaged in areas where there is 'world-leading' research.
These results highlight the huge benefit students get from studying at the University. All of the research carried out at Sunderland is fed directly into the institution's academic programme provision. This means that students are receiving the latest information from some of the world's leading researchers.
All of the relevant research is shared with industry and business in the region.
