Our Facilities in the Faculty of Applied Sciences

The Department of Computing and Technology is a Microsoft Regional Centre for the North of England and a Certified Cisco Academy for both associate (CCNA) and Professional (CCNP) levels. The City of Sunderland has also recently been named as one of the seven most IT-intelligent communities in the world.

Our Students have access to Microsoft software development products and Adobe products for use at home or on their laptops. These include packages such as Visual Studio, Visio, Project, SQL Server, Adobe Dreamweaver and Flash, as well as current operating systems (Windows Vista and Server). Every student also gets free access to the internet from their laptops via the University's extended wireless network.

We are THE automotive University in the region and are becoming one of the leading knowledge sourses in the UK for the automotive and manufacturing sectors. Our engineering students are encouraged to pit their skills at International level, and as part of their studies design, build, test and race a 600cc single-seat racing car against other universities in the high profile Formula Student contest. Many organisations have supported our Formula Student Team, including Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd, who gave us use of their test track and have provided car parts and engine development. The competition provides real practical engineering experience as well as development of academic skills, independent learning, critical thinking, problem solving and communication.

Our City Campus has a wide range of modern laboratories and other facilities for students undertaking science programmes. We are continually enhancing these facilities in line with changing academic and professional demands. Pharmacists are playing an increasingly important role as medical advisors in the community. Therefore, our mock pharmacist's shop complete with video recording equipment, enables us to give you the best possible feedback on exercises designed to develop your professional skills.

Our staff and graduates highlight our quality in pharmacy. Professor Jim Smith recently left his role as the Government's Chief Pharmaceutical Officer to teach at Sunderland. The President of The Royal Pharmaceutical Society in 2007/08 - pharmacy's governing body - was Sunderland graduate Hemant Patel.
