Centre for Primary and Community Care

The Centre for Primary and Community Care (CPCC) is directed by Professor Greg Rubin and is part of the Faculty of Applied Sciences. Its ethos is one of conducting high quality research, drawing on a wide range of disciplines through collaborative academic partnerships. It also seeks to enable service practitioners to engage in research and has supported a succession of early research career opportunities, in partnership with primary care organisations.

Our research focus

Our primary research focus is on:

  • clinical care in general practice
  • inequalities in health and social care and
  • quality improvement in health care.

Expertise and experience

We have specific expertise in:

  • gastrointestinal problems in primary care, including cancer
  • mental health
  • community-based interventions for public health and
  • new professional roles.

We have extensive experience in research that utilises practitioner networks, particularly in primary care.

Links, collaborations, associations

Our internal links are with:

  • the Pharmacy Policy and Practice Research Group and
  • the Centre for Family Studies

in the same School of the University.

We also have a wide range of collaborations with:

  • Universities in the UK (Durham, Newcastle, Birmingham, Kings College London and Manchester among others) and
  • Europe (including Utrecht and the Charles University, Prague).

We are closely associated with:

  • the Primary Care Research Network of the National Institute for Health Research
  • the Mental Health Research Network
  • the Comprehensive Local Research Networks in the Northeast and
  • the Topic-specific LRNs for diabetes, stroke and dementia/degenerative diseases.

About our work

An important part of our work is concerned with the implementation of research findings. We work with primary care organisations and local government to achieve this, providing:

  • evaluation of public health initiatives
  • advice on the development of services in primary and community care and
  • customised training courses.

As a result we host the Teaching Public Health Network for the region.
