Introduction

BSc (Hons) in Psychology provides an opportunity to study a range of psychological theories and approaches. You have the opportunity to consider 'big issues' in contemporary psychology as well as studying pioneering approaches and major thinkers.

The degree operates within a flexible framework allowing you to select modules to suit your own interests. At Levels 1 and 2 you study a range of core modules providing a good grasp of psychological knowledge across a number of topics. In Level 3, you choose from a suite of options to pursue in greater depth topics that interest you.

New psychology laboratories offer excellent teaching and research facilities and these include social, cognitive and computing laboratories. Staff expertise covers a wide range of areas a wide variety of research projects take place in the department.

Psychology is taught on the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's. This campus boasts video conferencing facilities, electronic whiteboards, PowerPoint and audio-visual facilities.

Students have access to 24-hour computing within the award winning centre for computing and have access to the excellent St Peter's Library and a wide range of books and journals in addition to database and electronic research information.

Our programme is fully accredited by the British Psychological Society and, on successful completion, provides Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership with the Society, provided the minimum standard of a Second Class Honours is achieved. This is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist. The British Psychological Society can provide information on becoming a Chartered Psychologist.

Entry Requirements

Our typical offer will be 260 points from a minimum of 2 A levels/AVCEs or equivalent (e.g. 1 x AVCE double award).

We accept a maximum of 20 points from Level 3 Key Skills.

We also require three passes at GCSE grade C or above which must include Mathematics and English Language or a minimum of Level 2 Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number.

Access Course: We would require successful completion of a Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education Access programme and that you would have a minimum of GCSE grade C Mathematics and English Language (or have obtained the equivalent as part of your course).

Scottish Highers: Our typical offer is for 260 points.

Irish Leaving Certificate: Our typical offer is for 260 points.

Teaching and Assessment

The Department of Psychology was recently rated the best in the North East for students satisfaction and is first nationally for assessment and feedback for the second year running based on the National Student Survey.

The Sunday Times ranked the Department number one for teaching excellence of all psychology departments in the country.

Teaching combines lectures with seminars, tutorials, supervised project and group work and resource based learning. The university is equipped with specialist psychological and computer laboratories.

Assessment is carried out through examinations, essays, individual and group seminar presentations, posters, multiple-choice tests, and short answer questions.

Career Opportunities

Psychology graduates move on to a broad range of careers spanning management, personnel, social work, public services (teaching, NHS, Civil Service, and the Armed Forces), counselling and advertising.

Many pursue postgraduate qualifications in order to enter specific fields of psychological practice including clinical, counselling, educational, environmental, forensic, health, occupational or industrial psychology, sports psychology or research and teaching in further and higher educational institutions.

As a student of the Department of Psychology, you will have access to some of the best learning support facilities in the higher education sector.

Our libraries provide computers, printing, photocopying, and inter-library loans. Sunderland also has an extensive electronic library collection, which means you can access much of the information you need on-line.

You will also benefit from access to over 500 computer workstations of the David Goldman Informatics Centre which offers the latest software packages - open seven days a week.
