Supplemental Information

Sport and Exercise Sciences relates to the application of science to the study and practice of sport and health related exercise. It also applies the three sub-disciplines of Sports and Exercise Science, psychology, physiology and biomechanics, as identified by the British Association of Sports and Exercise Sciences (BASES), to the examination of sporting and health related performance.

Sports and Exercise Scientists are extensive in their knowledge and flexible in their skills. They may be looking to explain sports problems and investigate the many features that make up sporting performances, or may be looking to deliver practical solutions in a health related environment. At the same time, the application of sports science knowledge is of value in teaching and coaching as well in consultancy work with individuals and teams.

If you have found sport studies or sciences exciting at your school and college you will appreciate our busy and active programme. We offer specialist studies in modern sports and exercise sciences taught through contemporary subjects and based on recent advances and research. We give you a dynamic teaching programme with a range of subject choices, a high content of practical work and a friendly and productive environment.

Facilities

State-of-the-Art Laboratories
Due to recent investment, our laboratories are among the best in the north of England providing the latest fitness equipment and
technology to assist you with your studies.

With the gap between winning and losing growing ever smaller, physical effort alone is no longer sufficient as top level sport
becomes more competitive. The range of health related diseases is also a current issue in the UK, therefore our state-of-the-art facilities will propel your learning in the application of sport and exercise sciences, technology and ultimately the impact from the elite athlete to the general health population.

Biomechanics
We can measure motion, muscle activity and forces on the body during high intensity sports and day-to-day activities of daily living. You will get to analyse movements in three dimensions using the Vicon® 3D analysis system to better understand technique.

Students also learn to use 2D Dartfish® software to capture live action images and give instantaneous analysis and feedback
to coaches and athletes in sports such as football, netball or skiing.

Dartfish is used by major sporting bodies such as the English Institute of Sport and the BBC.

Exercise Physiology
Whether in the lab, out in the field, or in the pool, we have the equipment to investigate the demands of most sports and daily activities.

Laser timing gates, portable gas and biochemical analysers enable students to measure human performance in and out of the lab. Our new Hosand®heart rate monitoring system allows students to display the heart rates of a full squad in real time on a laptop to make sure no-one is slacking!

Fitness and Conditioning Suite
In our lab you'll find dedicated fitness and conditioning equipment that would be the envy of most modern gyms. From a wide range of cardiovascular equipment to machine and free weights, you will receive hands-on teaching in a fully equipped and professional environment.
