Introduction

Click here to go to the Combined Subjects Homepage.

The Combined Subjects degree provides an opportunity to study Sport with another subject as a major, minor or dual combination.

The sports degree is multidisciplinary; with sport, sociology and health studies personnel contributing to the delivery.

Opportunity for study exists in the areas of sport and exercise physiology, sports development, sports medicine and sports injuries, psychology, exercise leadership and sociology, sports coaching, and history of sport.

The variety of teaching and learning approaches used provides a stimulating learning experience throughout all three levels.

The sport and exercise programmes make extensive use of WebCT as a support mechanism for learning and communication. This allows students to download a wide range of materials and access self assessment exercises.

Major
All students will take the multidisciplinary SSP 111 Introduction to Sport and Exercise Sciences at Level 1.

Additionally, students on the Major route will take a Research Methods strand comprising SSP 100 at Level 1 that is a pre-requisite for SSP 200 at Level 2 that, in turn, is a pre-requisite for SPP 321 Dissertation at Level 3.

From this platform students have a wide range of possible module choices at Levels 2 and 3. The study of SSP 111 at Level 1 enables students to select from a series of either designated options or routes at Levels 2 and 3 where they can study a choice/combination from the four core disciplines of sport and exercise sciences as designated by BASES, namely; sport and exercise physiology, sport and exercise psychology, biomechanics, or anatomy/sports injuries.

Students may select one or more of these 'core disciplines'. These modules may be particularly attractive to those students who have a stronger science background.

Alternatively, students can select from a range of options in either; sports development, sociology of sport or history of sport to complete their module selection at Levels 2 and 3.

Dual
All students will take the multidisciplinary SSP 111 Introduction to Sport and Exercise Sciences at Level 1.

Additionally, students on the Dual route who wish to take SSP 321 Dissertation at Level 3 will take a Research Methods strand comprising SSP 100 at Level 1 that is a pre-requisite for SSP 200 at Level 2 that, in turn, is a pre-requisite for SPP 321 Dissertation at Level 3.

Students studying the Dual route who do not wish to take the dissertation can select from a choice of option modules.

From this platform students again have a wide range of possible module choices at Levels 2 and 3.

As with the Major route the study of SSP 111 at Level 1 enables students to select from a series of either designated options or routes at Levels 2 and 3 when they can study either a choice from the four core disciplines of sport and exercise sciences as designated by BASES, namely; sport and exercise physiology, sport and exercise psychology, biomechanics, or sports injuries. Dual students may also select one or more of these core disciplines.

Alternatively students can select from a range options in either; sports development, sociology of sport or history of sport to complete their module selection at Levels 2 and 3.

Minor
Students who wish to take the minor route may have a much more general interest in sport as well a potentially varied academic background to those who take the major or dual routes.

Students still have the option to take the multidisciplinary SSP 111 Introduction to Sport and Exercise Sciences at Level 1.

Alternatively, students can study SSP 101 Practical Studies in Sport and Exercise Sciences together with a choice of option modules. From this platform students have a range of possible option module choices at Levels 2 and 3 principally from the developmental, sociological or historical aspects of the subject.
