Introduction
The next intake of this programme will be in September 2012 (there will no longer be a January intake). Applications should be made using a University Application Form which can be downloaded from the website.
The programme will offer an honours progression route for students who have graduated with a Foundation Degree in Counselling or a comparable 2 year Diploma in Counselling.
The programme will enable students to reflect on research in specific areas of counselling which are of interest to them and relevant to their clinical practice.
Mental health problems which are encountered in counselling practice and different approaches to understanding and treating them will be explored.
Students will explore important issues in both professional counselling practice and their own personal and professional development.
The programme also offers the opportunity to reflect on the therapeutic relationship from a range of perspectives.
The programme responds to the Government's agenda for greater professionalisation within counselling.

- Counselling Dissertation CNS07 (40 credits)
- Mental Health and Illness PSY340 (20 credits)
- The Therapeutic Relationship CNS304(20 credits)
- Evidence Based Practice and Professional Development CNS305 (20 credits)
Entry Requirements
A Foundation Degree in Counselling or an equivalent qualification.

Teaching and Assessment
Teaching will be carried out in an interactive way with a combination of lectures, group work and discussions.
Assessment will be by a project, essays and an exam.
Work Experience
There are no assessed placements on this programme but all students are encouraged to be clinically active at the time they undertake the programme, although this is not a requirement.
The University of Sunderland is host to the Northern Therapeutic Network and has built up considerable expertise in Counselling education within the North East.
Career Opportunities
This programme will enhance the employability of students who have already acquired a Foundation Degree or similar qualification in Counselling by enhancing their level of academic achievement.
