Our Departments

The Faculty of Applied Sciences was formed in August 2008 by combining elements of a number of existing schools within the university to bring together a distinctive range of science based  academic programmes.

The Faculty of Applied Sciences now has 4 departments

The Department of Computing, Engineering and Technology provides a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in computing and engineering. All our courses have been developed to provide relevant and exciting programmes to study - but in addition we ensure that our students are also developing the critical knowledge and skills which employers require. We have a wide range of links and partnerships with leading companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Yahoo, and SAP to ensure the employment skills we develop in our students are what employers require. The Department is a key partner in the Sunderland Software City Project - a major regional initiative - which seeks to establish the City of Sunderland as a national centre for the software industry in the UK. This project will provide a number of exciting opportunities for our students: study bursaries, project and placement opportunities in leading organisations and support and guidance for individual enterprise to flourish.

The Department of Pharmacy, Health & Wellbeing brings together a variety of disciplines and programmes, with a theme of improving people's Health and Wellbeing. Our staff are highly qualified and use their wealth of experience in the education and training of future professionals in many different arenas of Healthcare. The long established Sunderland Pharmacy School is part of the Department where the Master Pharmacy programme, accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) , is delivered.

The Department of Psychology provides a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Psychology and Counselling. Our undergraduate programmes are accredited by the British Psychological Society. We are rated number 1 out of 108 Psychology departments in the UK for Teaching Excellence by the Sunday Times University Guide 2012.

The Department of Sport & Exercise Sciences has been offering a range of Sport and Exercise programmes since 1993 and now has a specialised, focused portfolio of programmes covering the key areas of the discipline.  We were recently ranked as one of the top 20 universities in the UK for Sports Science in the 2009 Guardian League Tables. The University is continuing to invest in its Sports and Exercise facilities - a key example of this will be the opening of a `state of the art- sports centre on-campus in September 2009.
