Facts and Figures

The department is housed within The David Goldman Informatics Centre where students have open access to 350 PCs. The centre features a 90-metre long, terraced computing area which includes chill out areas and spaces to work in teams.

We have over 350 Microsoft software packages available to students as part of the department Microsoft Alliance membership. Network and telecommunications teaching is delivered in dedicated labs and is based around the CISCO curriculum. Comprehensive engineering laboratories provide facilities covering both electrical and mechanical engineering including an engine test bed and wind tunnel. All students are eligible to join the Formula Student Racing Team, which designs and builds a new racing car each year.

The department has a long track-record in providing exciting and rewarding placements. For example, this year we have students at Microsoft, Corus, British Energy, Nissan, Vauxhall Motors, Hewlett Packard, SAP as well as other local and national companies.

We currently have 75 research students registered for PhD or MPhil study. These researchers can be full or part-time, and study at Sunderland and worldwide.

The department provides a wide selection of our undergraduate and postgraduate courses through a network of over 40 worldwide study centres.
