Welcome to the Department of Psychology at the University of Sunderland.
Why Psychology at Sunderland?
- 92% of Psychology students are satisfied with the overall quality of the course at Sunderland according to the National Student Survey 2011, the highest for all psychology departments in the North East for the 3rd year running.
- Psychology at Sunderland was ranked first in the UK for assessment and feedback, second for academic support and personal development, and fourth for teaching on the course in The National Student Survey 2011.
- Rated first out of 108 Psychology departments in the UK for Teaching Excellence by the Sunday Times University Guide 2012.
Also, the CHE (Centre for Higher Education Development) in Germany has recently awarded the University of Sunderland's psychology department an excellence rating. CHE has rated 34 UK universities "excellent" in a number of subjects, including psychology.
Our philosophy is to advance the knowledge and understanding of human behaviour and to produce Psychology graduates, from a wide range of educational backgrounds, with exceptional critical evaluation and analysis skills.
We offer a range of undergraduate (with Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society) and postgraduate degree programmes, as well as research degrees, in a stimulating and varied learning environment. Our staff have research expertise and reach-out interests in wide-ranging areas of Psychology and are involved in a number of projects. These projects include the investigation of prospective memory, play, computational modelling and visual perception and include collaborative projects with the Metropolitan Police, the Educational Psychology Service (within the Local Educational Authority) and the National Health Service.
Our undergraduate course (BSc Psychology) is designed to reflect the diverse nature of Psychology as a discipline and the research interests of our staff. In addition to the core areas of Psychology, we have option modules that include areas such as Clinical Neuropsychology, Mental Health and Evolutionary Psychology but also include less traditional areas such as the Psychology of Sexual Behaviour and Intimate Relationships and the Psychology of Terrorism (for a full list of the modules available please see the Undergraduate Brochure).
The department is located within a modern, award-winning, purpose-built campus by the river Wear with state-of-the-art facilities. Our staff are committed to providing our students with a friendly and engaging study environment and take pride in providing an excellent supportive learning environment where students have the opportunity to discuss their work on a one-to-one basis.
