While we are superbly equipped to provide you with hands-on training and experience, we also have knowledgeable and experienced teaching staff to support you in your studies. Staff are approachable and friendly but deeply committed to their specialist subject areas and to the development of their students. Indeed, this willingness to work with students and share their knowledge is one of the most commented upon areas by our external examiners.
We have developed a range of successful programmes to suit people from all sorts of backgrounds and all types of interests. Our undergraduate programmes have been designed to ensure that they meet the needs of the sport, exercise and health, and leisure areas of employment. As a result, our graduates can gain access into many different working environments in the public, commercial and voluntary sectors of sport, health and leisure. We have also developed a range of Foundation Degrees that are delivered by collaborating partner colleges, which lead many students to vocational employment or, alternatively, offers another route to an honours degree.
On any of our sport and exercise programmes, you will develop general knowledge and skills of coaching, exercise leadership and management, introductory sports and exercise sciences, and the social contexts in which sport and exercise exists. You will also develop ICT skills through the use of the University's range of resources and be supported by on-line web-based learning tools. This crucial combination will put you in the ideal position to choose your specialist route and seize exciting employment or postgraduate opportunities be they in coaching, health and fitness, sports development, or sports science.
To support those who are interested in coaching or leadership work, we are developing an extensive community sport and physical activity programme with schools and colleges in and around the city.
Sunderland enters the inter-university BUSA competitions in many sports. We provide funding for talented individuals through our Elite Athlete programme and we are part of the national Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS). If you are looking for funding for performance sport then Sunderland is the place to come.
