Combined Subjects

In today's fluid job market, the graduate with the greatest range of subject knowledge and skills stands out from the crowd. Students are therefore increasingly moving away from single honours subjects and embracing the flexibility and choice afforded to them by combined subjects programmes.

Sunderland has taken this a step further by offering up to 30 subjects from across the University's programmes to make up the Combined Subjects Programme. These can be combined in a number of different ways to create programmes tailored to the diverse and demanding needs of today's graduates and their employers.

The Combined Subjects Programme offers an extensive range of subjects that can be combined as either major-minor (two subjects with an emphasis on one of them), or dual (two subjects combined on an equal basis).

Combined Subjects is normally a three year programme, but you can take four years if you wish to take a year out to work in industry or to study abroad. There is flexibility within the programme and usually in the first year you are able to change the balance of studies or even subjects, which allows you to delay your final choice of two subjects until the end of your first year.

You also have the opportunity to choose a module each year, in a different subject to your chosen two. Many students opt to take a modern language, develop their skills in E-Learning or pick from a variety of modules in other subject areas.
