Psychology is at the forefront of our understanding of this, with research into how we think and behave being of great interest and value to modern society. With a psychology degree from Sunderland, you will gain valuable knowledge and experience in this rapidly growing field.
The Department of Psychology offers a single honours programme that is accredited by the British Psychological Society as conferring eligibility for Graduate Membership of the Society with the Graduate Basis for Registration. This is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist in one of eight areas recognised by the British Psychological Society.
Psychology has applications in many contexts; from working with clinical disorders, to managing education and training. It is widely used in industry and employment as well as in legal and health contexts. The degree is designed to suit your personal needs, so with this in mind we operate within a flexible framework, which allows you to select specific modules from within the programme to suit your own interests.
We have a strong track record of employability from this programme, with recent graduates entering a wide range of professions. In recent years, we have seen psychology graduates enter careers in health and social welfare, industry, education and also research. As well as good employment opportunities, many of our graduates go on to study for further postgraduate qualifications including specialised psychology Masters (such as counselling psychology) and PhD programmes.
The psychology programme at Sunderland covers a wide range of topics that reflects the diversity of interests of our world-recognised teaching staff. These topics include those in the core areas of psychology such as biological psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, individual differences and social psychology, as well as more diverse topics such as counselling psychology, evolutionary psychology and psychology of terrorism.
We feel that studying psychology at Sunderland will not only provide you with a strong background in the subject but will also provide valuable skills and experience for future employment, and a great insight into what it is to be human.
The Department of Psychology is part of the School of Business, Law and Psychology and is based on the university's award-winning Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's, on the banks of the river Wear. The department is based in the Reg Vardy Centre, with purpose-built research and teaching facilities for psychology. These include:
- Social psychology laboratory
- Cognitive psychology laboratory
- Eye-tracking laboratory
- Multimedia and games research room
There is also the Psychology Café, a student-run organisation which arranges for professionals to present their research and offer discussion on working in various fields of psychology. It also co-ordinates trips to the British Psychological Society's annual student conference as well as other relevant trips.
