Our curriculum

  • The best 'new' universities in the UK for the overall quality, quantity and range of research.
  • Sunderland named the leading university in the country for widening access in Government-backed performance indicators - an accolade it has received in seven of the last eight years.
  • School of Education sets up Children's, Young People and Families Centre to help the Government meet the five aims set out in the Every Child Matters agenda.
  • Award-winning Moving On Up Campaign helps to set Sunderland education agenda.
  • University receives 'A' rating from Ofsted for its secondary education provision - one of only eight given in the country.
  • The Government names University of Sunderland a National Centre for Excellence for Teacher Training for further education.  
  • Tony Blair launches first higher education qualification for councillors.

Our staff and students

  • Dr Dennis Wheeler presented to the Queen for his pioneering research into climates.
  • Film lecturer Dan Elliot scoops two major awards at the Venice Film Festival.
  • Carole Hopkins named Student of the Year by the North East Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
  • Academic Elizabeth Atkinson wins international award for her research into homophobic bullying in primary schools.
  • Graduate Anna Heywood was one of three people shortlisted for campaigner of the year in The Observer's Ethical Awards. The other two were renowned environmentalist George Monbiot and former US Vice-President Al Gore.
  • Carolyn Chalkley named England's top teacher trainer in design and technology by the Design and Technology Association.

Our environment

  • Sunderland named leading university in Britain for equality and diversity in the national Workplace Equality Index.
  • Sunderland ranked in top 20 for personal development of students in the National Student Satisfaction Survey.
  • The University was voted Marketing Team of the Year 2007 at the National Heist Awards.
  • The Times names Sunderland one of the top 50 employers in the country for equal opportunities and named one of the best workplaces for women in the UK by Opportunity Now.
  • University wins Fairtrade status for second year.
  • The Carbon Trust awards Sunderland its highest accolade in recognition of its efforts in energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction.
  • The Gateway Building is shortlisted in the refurbished building category in the national British Council of Offices awards.

Our partners

  • Washington DC Friendship Agreement signed.
  • Sunderland Software City launched with University, Sunderland City Council and One NorthEast.
  • Work starts on the City of Sunderland's new sixth form College on Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's - the first further education college on a university campus.
