John is the Head of Postgraduate Business Programmes in the School and takes the academic lead on the development of national and international programmes covering all the business subject areas of postgraduate full time and part time education.
Following a number of appointments to local authorities and a period as Executive Director of a national local government association John joined the University of Sunderland Business School as a Senior Lecturer in 1995. In 1999 he was appointed Principal Lecturer and Head of Strategic and International Management Studies. In addition to his academic role, during the period 2000-2008 he was a member of several central government working parties examining public sector Codes of Official Conduct as well as working with the Audit Commission, the Improvement and Development Agency and the Standards Board for England. He also served as a Non-Executive Director on a NHS Acute Trust.
