Tourism is both a cultural activity and the world's biggest single industry. In Britain alone it directly supports 1.7 million jobs and accounts for about 5% of GDP. It can offer an extremely rewarding career with a unique mix of people, culture and business. Tourism impacts not only the people who are involved in it, but also the societies that provide services and experiences. It's vital that these impacts are well managed. There are also environmental impacts to consider - if these are not predicted and managed, then tourism could ultimately destroy its own resources.
