Grundvig
There are currently two projects funded by Grundvig at the University
Pilgrims' Way
Staff and students visit European countries to raise their knowledge of Pilgrim journeys and places of historical/cultural interest in each area. During the visit they walk part of the pilgrim route/area of historical interest, attend workshops on the subject in English and take part in other visits (e.g. visits to Mayor's office etc).
In our visit to Leer Germany, we visited an excellent project run by the Town Hall which ensures that young people remain aware of the dangers of Fascism and its terrible consequences. The memory of 252 Jews from the town who were killed in the Holocaust is kept alive through a series of interesting activities that the local children take part in.

John and Jane's Trip
During class and in between independent learning time, students communicate with students from other European countries via email and Facebook and plan how they will present information about UK (e.g. by video, photos, dance, play, writing etc). This is primarily a language project.
The Languages Department hosted the first visit from the European project John and Jane's Trip. The group of 16 students and 2 teachers from Mallorca and Bergen had been in contact with each other as part of their language classes for several months and finally met in Sunderland in April. They had the opportunity to interview each other, create videos of their visit, take photos and then give some fantastic, innovative presentations on what they discovered.

Transversal Programme: An evaluation of Work Based Learning in Europe
A Study Visit to Bari, Italy hosted by ITC Domenico Romanazzi School comprised of ten participants from seven countries including Jenny Hayes of the University of Sunderland. This visit investigated the similarities between European methods for evaluating work-based learning.

The schedule included contributions from Confindustria Private Enterprises Local Board, Puglia and Ufficio Scolastico Regionale Puglia (Region Education Board) along with Borsa Lavoro (National job search Website).
The team also interviewed a number of companies who participate in work-based learning experiences, including a generous welcome by Bosch, IBM and Explorando Tourism. The participants visited other local educational establishments, including ITIS Marconi school along with the tours organised by IPSSAR Mauro Perrone school, Castellaneta, Puglia.
For further information on either of the projects, please contact Jenny Hayes: jenny.hayes@sunderland.ac.uk.
