BIOGRAPHY

Gillian is currently a Postgraduate Academic Assistant (PAA) in Criminology: Crime, Race and Ethnicity.  She secured a degree in Criminology and Social Research followed by an MSc in Social Research.  She is currently studying for a PhD concerning an `Exploration of Racist Perpetrators in the North East of England'.  Gillian aims to critically explore the experiences, attitudes and explanations of convicted racist offenders within the North East of England.  Aside from her PhD studies, her other duties include lecturing, seminar work and supervision of dissertation students.  Gillian alongside Dr Anthony Amatrudo and Rick Bowler helped develop and teach the new Criminology module, `Race', Racialization and the Criminal Justice System. 

RESEARCH INTERESTS AND EXTERNAL ENGAGEMENTS   

Gillian Denny's past research includes a review of South Tyneside Council's 2003 Homelessness Strategy, an evaluation of a Youth Choice project that is concerned with ensuring positive life chance outcomes for young people defined as `at risk' in South Tyneside.  Other research includes a review of the Homelessness Strategies in Tyne and Wear and Northumberland, an evaluation of Working with Racially Aggravated Perpetrators (WRAP) and an evaluation of the ARCH (Agencies Against Racist Crime and Harassment) regarding the reporting and recording of racist incidents.  Other research experience includes an evaluation of CCTV in Blyth and a development and feasibility consultation for Newcastle 'Safety Works!' for New Deal for Communities.  Gillian was a member of the team that evaluated the Northumbria Community Safety Strategy SRB2 Programme 'Tackling the Fear of Crime'.  Her role involved extensive consultation with partners, practitioners and local residents in a number of high crime areas across Northumbria.  She has also contributed to the Newcastle Crime Reduction Partnership, Public Consultation for the Newcastle Community Safety Audit 2001/2002, conducting both qualitative and quantitative research and analysis.  She undertook statistical analysis for the Newcastle City Centre Customer Theft Survey.

Her research interests fall within Racist Perpetrators, Racism within the Criminal Justice System, Homelessness, the Police and Crime Prevention.
