Biography
Anna Heyman is module leader for SWK 111 Social Policy and Social Problems and also contributes to various modules on the BA Social Work programme, including Comparative Social Policy and Social Work Research Methods. She also teaches on some modules related to Social Policy on other programmes. She has a strong interest in the service user and carer involvement aspects of the course.
Anna holds a Postgraduate Academic Assistant post in the Department of Social Sciences. She is completing a PHD on young carers transitions to adulthood. Anna's theoretical interests are in issues relating to the position of youth in society. She is carrying out in-depth interviews with staff and service users on how young people's caring roles in relation to disability or long-term sickness in the family develop or change between the ages of 16 and 21 and how these changes interact with other aspects of the young carers life course.
Teaching Areas
Social Policy, Comparitive Social Policy, Social Work Research, Position of Youth in Society, Young Adult Carers.
Research Interests
Anna's research interests are in levels of service-user and front-line practitioner involvement in training, volunteering and informal education and in participatory research methods. In some of her past work she looked at project-based work with groups of service users in Sure Start and Creative Partnerships Schools. This predominately set out to evaluate and explain the processes by which service users expressed needs and aspirations came to be recognized and acted upon by professionals and managers. She locates such work within broader social policy agendas around raising educational attainment and widening participation in Further and Higher Education.
