Project aims

The overall aim of the research is to develop knowledge of the understanding that parents of Bangladeshi and Pakistani origin have of the education system, and their children's educational experience, to discern their role in relation to their children's education and to access the children's perspectives on these issues.

In particular we aim to:

  • provide a voice for Bangladeshi and Pakistani parents whose views tend to be underrepresented in research and policy together with that of their children who are currently underachieving in the education system. Through this knowledge and understanding it is intended that the research will contribute to the development of policy and practice and opportunities for greater and more fruitful parental participation;
  • identify specific needs, concerns, and constraints that impede a positive educational experience for children and the involvement of their parents;
  • identify any positive features and or possibilities that contribute, or could contribute to the improvement of achievement and an enhanced experience of education;
  • contribute to the parental involvement discourse within Educational Studies by making specific reference to the needs of minority ethnic groups; by problematising the taken for granted assumptions that underpin this discourse; by contributing to the debate around cultural diversity and issues of participatory democracy.
