History
While History research at Sunderland has a strong regional element, there is a considerable spread in interests and coverage. Sunderland's historians address national and indeed international problems.
History has built upon its '4' in RAE2001 further to develop and sustain its strengths in North East history, Irish and Scottish history, Early Modern history, modern British political history, early American and Atlantic history and climate history. History has benefited from considerable support both from the University and from external sources. Strategic planning has also helped to facilitate and guide progress, in line with the goal of improving on areas of existing strength. This is the established policy at departmental, school and university level.
Regional history, in particular, represents a critical mass. The AHRC Centre and VCH project have provided further impetus for the cohesion and expansion of a genuine research group. Colleagues are working together and separately on a range of projects in regional history, all of which rely on substantial archive collections in local repositories. Work in progress, and the books, articles and other items already published, suggest that this research group will continue to develop in terms of productivity and wider importance beyond the current RAE period.
Research is managed and co-ordinated primarily by the History Research Leader and the Culture Area Research Strategy Group (CARSG), in line with the requirements and guidance issued by the University. Institutional support for research has been vital in developing a sustainable research culture.
