Politics and International Studies
Politics and International Studies was established as a research area at Sunderland in1996 and entered the RAE for the first time in 2001, achieving a '3a' rating with all members of staff submitted. 
Politics and International Studies staff have been active in a range of fora since RAE2001, including the presentation of public lectures to a range of public bodies, organising conferences, holding visiting professorships, acting as academic advisers and serving as referees or on editorial boards.
Overall there has clearly been substantial progress in a majority of the objectives set out as part of RAE2001, notably in terms of numbers of PhD completions, levels of external funding and the maintaining of a high level of research activity by all academic staff.
